Rodents tend to attack the rice crop from sowing to harvest and cause damage to germinating seeds in the seed bed, growing seedlings in the nursery, tiller damage in the transplanted crop, panicle hoarding in the burrows in ripened crop. In this regard, DAATTC, Karimnagar in collaboration with All India Network Project (AINP) on Vertebrate Pest Management organized training programme on “Rodent Management in Rice Crop” and Method demonstration on “Poison bait technique” at Rythuvedika, Hanmajipeta village of Vemulawada Rural mandal in Rajanna Siricilla district. Dr. K. Madan Mohan Reddy, Scientist (TOT) & Coordinator invited the dignitaries and farmers to the programme and briefed about the damages caused due to rats in rice fields and also explained about the management practices to be followed for present pest problem in rice fields. Later, Dr. I. Aruna Sri, Scientist, AINP on VPM, Rajendranagar has explained the different methods to control the rat damage in the rice fields and also demonstrated procedure of poison bait preparation with chemicals Zinc Phosphide and Bromadiolone and application in the field followed by demonstrated rat traps installation in the field. Then handed over the burrow fumigator to the Hanmajipeta cluster farmers. After that Sri. Bhasker, ADA, Vemulawada has suggested the farmers to encourage natural check of the rats by not killing rat snakes, water snakes and other natural enemies of the rats and by providing perches on field bunds and fields for owls to encourage predation of rats. The Mandal Agricultural Extension Officer Sri.Sandeep, RAWEP students and 35 farmers were participated in the programme.
