DAATTC, Mahabubnagar, KVK, Palem and officials of Department of Agriculture Jogulamba Gadwal district Jointly organized Diagnostic field visit on 04.07.202 at Chagapuram, Ramapuram (Itikyala mandal), Shanthi Nagar (Alampur mandal), and Toorpugarla padu (Rajol mandal) villages of J. Gadwal district. In this session 72 farmers and four mandal agriculture officers along with AEOs.

Activity Details:

  1. As per the instructions of Associate Director of Research, RARS, Palem, joint diagnostic visit was conducted in cotton fields of Jogulamba Gadwal.
  2. The seed Cotton has been cultivating in 20,500 acres with US Gold, VIP Gold BG II, Akash etc and commercial  Cotton in 5,450 acres with Ankur, Rasi, Veda and Sriram varieties
  3. Current year, cotton sowings have been taken up from II FN of March to I FN of June. The crop is at vegetative, flowering and initial boll formation stage.
  4. The major observation made during the visit was, stunted growth, reddening of leaves, sucking pest complex (Jassids, Thrips and mealy bugs), poor pollen set, drying up of leaves and premature flower drop and magnesium deficiency
  5. Crop was severely suffered with the heat stress due to which wilting, stunted growth and reddening was noticed.
  6. The reddening of the crop was due to the multiple reasons viz., heat stress, Jassids infestation and magnesium deficiency.
  7. Flowering, Pollen setting was coincided with the high temperatures during April, May and June months, this could be one of the reasons for the poor pollen setting and premature flower drop.
  8. As far as the insect pests are considered, since the crop is at 30 to 70 days old, due to the high temperatures and delayed monsoons sucking pests complex is above ETL. Further, Tobacco streak viral disease was at the initial stage in few fields due to the thrips incidence.
  9. Soils are black to red chalka and observed salinity patches in few locations.
  10. Due to the delayed monsoon in this Vanakalam, 2023, most of the cotton growing farmers are shifting to chilli cultivation
  11. In few locations, the damaged crops were removed and preparing for alternate crops like Blackgram, Tobacco, Chilli etc.
  12. Keeping all the observations in view, INM, right use of fertilizers, best crop management practices IPM practices were recommended to farmers by installing Yellow, white and blue sticky traps to control sucking pests complex, pheromone traps to monitor boll worms, Stem application with monocrotophos (1:4) at 30 & 40 DAS, Imidacloprid/ Flonicamid (1:20) at 60 DAS, Clean cultivation, removing weeds from bunds,  spraying with 5% Neem oil at the early stage of the crop, ETL based chemical spray with Acephate@1.5 g/lit or  Imidacloprid 0.25 ml/lit or Acetamaprid @ 0.8 g/lit or Flonicamid @ 0.4 g/lit or Fipronil @ 2ml/lit or Spinosad @ 0.5 ml/lit etc.
  13. The major reason behind the advancement of cotton crop at Jogulamba Gadwal district is to escape from the Pink Boll worm incidence and received the cotton seed from private companies (Ankur, Rasi, Veda and Sriram) well in advance for the seed cotton production.
  14. It was reported by DAO, Gadwal in MTU-1001 (Vijetha) paddy variety, a minute black spot was noticed and asked for reasons and the same thing was reported to Principal Scientist and Head, IRR and he stated that it is reported from Kampasagar in Nellore varieties in addition to Vijetha.
  15. Finally, the detailed information on the crop stage, extent of crop damage, pests and disease scenario has been submitted and discussed with the District Magistrate, Smt. Kranthi Valloori, Collector, Jogulamba Gadwal at Collectorate, Jogulamba Gadwal.
