Awareness programme on International year of Millets was conducted by Village Adoption Programme Committee, NSS team, experts of College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar in the Panchayat office and in Zilla Parishad High School of Adopted village, Guduru, on 25-02-2023. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 2023 as the International Year of Millets, as proposed by India to the Food and Agriculture Organization and the primary aim of this initiative is to increase the awareness of millets’ health benefits among the people and their suitability for cultivation under tough conditions marked by climate change. As a part of which Village Adoption Programme Committee, NSS team, experts have organized an awareness programme on millets to the farmers in Panchayat office and to the students and teachers in Zilla Parishad High School, Guduru under the chairmanship of the Associate Dean Dr. C. Narendra Reddy. Convenor Dr. T. Ramesh, Sr. Professor and Head, Crop Physiology, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar has explained the importance of millet consumption as it helps in protecting cardiovascular tissues thereby decreasing the risk of chronic diseases. He encouraged the farmers to take up millet production in their fields. Miss K. Aishwarya, Ph.D Scholar, Department of Food science and Nutrition has explained the importance of balanced nutrition through millets and consumption of various value added products from millets will enhance the health of the individuals. Millet diet also helps in managing blood glucose levels in people with diabetes and reduces the degree of overweight and obesity. Later the Village Adoption Programme Committee team of scientists have visited the sorghum field and identified sucking pest infestation for which the farmer is recommended to apply Acephate @ 2gm/lt. The VAP committee members Dr. K. Shailaja, Dr. Y. Samatha Parameshwari, Dr. K. Aruna and Dr. I Shakuntala Devi, other participants included Village sarpanch Sri.Byagari Sataiah garu, AEO Mrs. K. Anitha, ward members, Panchayat Secretary, farmers, students and teachers of ZPHS have participated and made the programme a grand success.
