VISIT TO VEGETABLE FIELDS at KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA, WYRA KHAMMAM ON 23.10.2024 AND 24.10.2024

Vegetables are usually classified on the basis of the part of the plant used as food. The root vegetables include beets, carrots, radishes, sweet potatoes and turnips. Among the edible tubers or underground stems are potatoes. The leaf and leaf stalk vegetables include Brussel sprouts, cabbage, celery, lettuce, rhubarb and spinach. The bulb vegetables include garlic, leeks and onions. The head, or flower, vegetables include artichokes, broccoli and cauliflower. The fruits commonly considered vegetables by virtue of their use include cucumbers, egg plant, ladies finger, squash, peppers and tomatoes. Seed vegetables are legumes like peas and beans Modern vegetable farming ranges from small-scale production for local sale to vast commercial operations utilizing automation and technology. Most vegetables are planted by seeding in the fields where they are to be grown, but occasionally they are germinated in a nursery or greenhouse and transplanted as seedlings to the field. During the growing season synthetic or organic herbicides, pesticides and fungicides are commonly used to inhibit damage by weeds, insects and diseases. KVK, Wyra scientists Dr. V. Chaitanya, SMS (Horticulture) and Dr. Jessie Suneetha W, SMS (Home Science) visited the vegetable crops of tomato, Dolichos bean, ridge gourd, chilli, bhendi, cauliflower, green leafy vegetables, inter cultivation of delicious bean and marigold on 23.10.2024 and 24.10.2024. The mandals in Konijerla, Khammam rural and Raghunadapalem with villages of Pallipadu, Balapet, Koyachelaka, Muthagudem, Vankdothuthanda, Bhudampadu and Suryathanda were visited. In these crops, the incidence of black rot in cauliflower, pot borer in Dolichos bean, downy mildew in ridge gourd, mites in chilli, Spodoptera in bhendi and suggested control measures as per university recommendations.
