Chilli is considered as one of the most important commercial spice crops and is widely used universal spice, named as wonder spice. Different varieties are cultivated for varied uses like vegetable, pickles, spice and condiments. Chillies are integral and the most important ingredient in many different cuisines around the world as it adds pungency, taste, flavour and color to the dishes. Indian chilli is considered to be world famous for two important commercial qualities—its colour and pungency levels. Some varieties are famous for the red colour because of the pigment Capsanthin and others are known for biting pungency attributed to capsaicin. The other quality parameters in chilli are length, width and skin thickness. Chilli growing farmers were faced lot of problems like pests and disease incidence, lack of knowledge on seed treatment, nursery raising on raised beds, pro tray nursery under shadenet and post harvest management , marketing. Inview of this, KVK Wyra has conducted Three days training programme on Integrated Crop Management in Chilli in collaboration with ITDA, Bhadrachalam to forty tribal farmers at farmers training centre for improving the knowledge and creating awareness on different crop management practices in chilli. In the first day of training programme - techniques like seed treatment for sucking pest, viral disease management, nursery raising techniques like raised bed technology in open field nursery, portray nursery raising under shadenet and polyhouse and demonstration on portrays filling with enriched cocopeat and seed treatment with pesticides and fungicides and seed sowing and watering in protays were shown to farmers. Department Officials, Sri G. Sandeep, CLH&SO, Khammam and Sri. Uday Bhaskar, APO, ITDA, Bhadrachalam also graced the occasion. Horticulture scientist Dr. V. Chaitanya, given lecture on nursery raising techniques in chilli and also visited chilli nursery under polyhouse and shadenet at Gundrathimadugu (Vill), Konijerla. In the second day of training programme – Dr. D. Nagaraju given lecture on weather based agro advisories to chilli farmers, Programme coordinator, KVK, Wyra Dr. J. Hemantha Kumar delivered a lecture on disease management in chilli and Dr.V.Chaitanya delivered lecture on recent techniques for yield improvement in chilli. Dr. K. Ravi Kumar delivered lecture on integrated pest management in chilli. Afternoon, visited chilli processing unit at Mudigonda (V&M),Khammam. In the third day of training programme –Dr.E.Rambabu, SMS (Horticulture), KVK, Malyal delivered a lecture on Post harvest management of chilli and afterwards KVK Scientists explained the models on recent technologies in various agriculture and horticulture crops at information centre at KVK,Wyra. Afternoon Dr. Jessie Suneetha W, SMS (Home science), KVK, Wyra delivered a lecture on various drudgery reducing tools and implements used in chilli.
