Sericulture is growing of silkworms to produce silk. It has become an important cottage industry in many countries now. China and India are the two main producers, with over 70% of the world’s annual production of silk. The bulk of the commercial silk produced in the world comes from Mulberry. Cocoon production is more in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Hence Keeping in view of importance of Sericulture, One day training programme on “Mulberry cultivation and Silkworm cocoon production” was conducted under ICAR- Scheduled Castes Sub Plan at Agricultural College, Jagtial on May 27th 2022. The trainees (60 Nos.) were farmers, rural youth and farm women of different villages in Jagtial district. Dr. S. Narendar Reddy, Associate Dean addressed the gathering on entrepreneurial opportunities of sericulture as it is well suited for rural residents employed in agriculture and artisans which provides income and jobs. Dr.V.Ratnakar, Assistant Professor, training programme incharge created awareness on Mulberry cultivation practices, nursery bed preparation and rearing of silkworms. Trainees have visited mulberry garden, nursery beds, Sericulture unit, different rearing equipments and different stages of live silkworm larva. Feedback was taken from trainees and expressed their satisfaction for successful learning. Brief information about training programme was given to print media for coverage. Other faculties have also participated in the programme.
