Training Programme on Seed Production Techniques of Major Crops in Northern Telangana Zone at Agricultural College, Jagtial on 31-01-2020

Agricultural College, Jagtial has conducted a one day Training programme on “Seed Production Techniques of Major Crops in Northern Telangana Zone” on 31.01.2020 with the financial assistance from ICAR under SC-Sub Plan scheme 2019-20. The programme was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest Dr. R. Uma Reddy, Associate Director of Research, RARS, Jagtial and Dr. Ch.V. Durga Rani, Principal Scientist (Oil seeds), RARS, Palem, Guest of Honour and the program was presided over by Dr. K. B. Suneeta Devi, Associate Dean, Agricultural College, Jagtial. Fifty (50) Scheduled Caste farmers from Gullapeta, Anantharam, Laxmipur, Morapelli and Porandla villages have attended the programme. Dr. M. Balram, Professor & Head, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding and Convenor of the program has given a detailed information about the programme. He also said that production of quality seed by farmer themselves is the most important aspect in reducing input cost of seeds and getting higher yields. Farmers should take utmost care in following the practices at the field level. Dr. Ch. V. Durga Rani in her address said that seed production by the farmers is not a difficult task and can be done by following few recommendation and proper management practices for gaining profits. She also said that in the potential areas like Karimnagar and Jagtial, Sesamum seed is in great demand as second crop after turmeric. Dr. R. Uma Reddy in his presidential address said that the farmers should utilize the services of scientist in college and RARS for training in seed production. There is a huge demand of seeds from RARS and also gave few case studies regarding the spreading of PJTSAU technologies. Dr. K. B. Suneetha Devi in her address said that college is focusing on field level activities through village adoption programme with an aim to spread the technologies to the farmers along with giving education to students. The students were also involved in social activities in the village so as to create social responsibility among the students. Sri. J. Thirupathi, Sarpanch, Gullapeta village in his address shared his experience with college and RARS and various technologies given by the scientists at the field level. He also thanked the Agricultural College for adopting Gullapeta village and for services provided to them. Sri. Ch. John, Sarpanch, Laxmipur village said that their village farmers are very cooperative and shared his experiences regarding the formation of farmer producer organization, their activities and marketing strategies in gaining profits. The dignitaries on the dias have released six pamphlets on seed production techniques in various crops like Paddy, Hybrid rice, Maize, Sesame, Ground nut and Soybean. Later, seeds of rice (JGL28545 minikit) and sesame (Sweta) were distributed to the farmers. Dr. V. Ram Reddy, Asst. Professor, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding has explained to farmers about importance of seed production in farmers fields and anchored the programme. Later on program was continued with presentations on techniques in seed production of Paddy, Hybrid rice, Maize, Sesame, Ground nut and Soybean by Dr. B. Laxmi Prasanna, Scientist, RARS Jagtial , Dr. B. Srinivas, Scientist, RARS Jagtial, Dr. D. Sravani, Scientist, ARS, Karimnagar, Dr. D. Padmaja, Scientist, RARS, Jagtial, Dr. P. Gonya Nayak, Scientist, RARS Jagtial and Dr. K. Sukumar, Associate Professor, Agricultural Polytechnic, Jagtial respectively and Dr. T. Srikanth has presented on importance of seed certification and standards. Dr. T. Sravan Kumar, Asst. Professor has advised the farmers to subscribe the PJTSAU Agricultural Videos (Youtube Channel). Further a field visit was organized by Dr. Y. Archana Karuni, Asst. Professor, Dr. B. Laxmi Prasanna, Scientist and Dr. P. Madhukar, Scientist to RARS, Jagtial to show seed production plots of Mustard, Paddy and Sesame. The programme was concluded with the collection of feedback forms from all the farmers and oral feedback from one farmer from each village.
