The first United Nations conference to have environment as the primary topic was held at Stockholm in 1972. Here, it was acknowledged that every human being has the fundamental right to live in a healthy environment. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was established as a result of the conference which became a historic global effort to preserve the environment. In addition, this event marked the official establishment of June 5th as “World Environment Day”. Since then, UNEP has made numerous international efforts to safeguard the mother nature. World Environment Day, 2023 provides hope and an opportunity for all of us to contribute to the protection of environment and well-being of the planet at a time when extreme temperatures, erratic storms, melting icebergs, cyclones and natural calamities constantly remind us of the irreparable damage that has been done to our planet Earth. The theme of World Environment Day – 2023 is "Ecosystem restoration – Solutions to plastic pollution”. As the plastics slowly seep into our oceans, soil and forests, it is causing irreparable damage and it serves as a reminder that individuals’ action is required regarding plastic usage to avoid its damaging effects. World Environment Day serves is the day that commemorates and calls for attention to the ongoing negative effects of climate change and global warming. The environmental ignorance is resulting in drastic climate changes leading to the loss of life, property, biodiversity and even natural resources. Over the course of more than 50 years, World Environment Day has served as a platform for environmental activists to assist common people in comprehending and assisting our natural environment. KVK, Wyra celebrated World Environment Day with farmers and its staff by taking a pledge to save the environment. The meeting was attended by Dr. J. Hemantha Kumar, Programme Coordinator, scientists Dr. Jessie Suneetha W, Dr. V. Chaitanya, Dr. K. Ravi Kumar, Mrs. P. S. M. Phanisri and Sri. T. Ranapratap, University REAC Member. An awareness program on ‘Beat the plastic pollution’ was organised and the participants were sensitized on importance to respect and care for mother earth, the animal and plant life, natural resources and their habitats. The simple ways to help protect the earth include the reduce, reuse and recycle materials and cut down on what is thrown away, maintain the surroundings clean with not just the households but at community level too, educate people of need for saving earth, conserve water, choose sustainable products, shop wisely, use long-lasting light bulbs and plant a tree. The ill effect of destroying the earth can lead to food shortage as the lands become barren and the oceans become fishless. The loss of biodiversity as whole species of living things disappear due to deforestation and increased pollution will affect our health. The rising temperatures may be too much for all living things on the planet to survive destroying them all.
