The World Environment Day was organized on 05-06-2023 at Agribiodiversity park (ABDP), PJTSAU, Rajendranagar by Dr. A.V. Ramanjaneyulu, Pr. Scientist (Agro.) & Head and Dr. T. Chaitanya, Scientist (Soil Science), AICRP on Agroforestry, PJTSAU, Rajendranagar. At the outset, Dr. M. Venkata Ramana, Registrar and Director of Research, PJTSAU has inaugurated the pylon on ‘I LOVE ABDP Agribiodiversity’ and ‘Lion and Blister beetle’ paintings on rocks in ABDP. Later, all the university higher officials, the Principal Scientists (Crops and Themes), the staff of AICRP on Agroforestry, PJTSAU, representatives from Learning Links foundation and Dell company and Nirman, an NGO, Hyderabad have participated in planting of saplings in Palm block and Butterfly garden. Dr. T. Chaitanya has invited all the dignitaries on to the dias. First, all the participants took a pledge on this auspicious occasion. Later, Dr. A.V. Ramanjaneyulu gave a brief account of World Environment Day and it’s importance. He has highlighted the need for environmental literacy, Sustainable Development, Sustainable Agriculture and Sustainable Livelihoods. He informed the gathering #Beat Plastic Pollution, this year’s theme, to avoid/lessen plastic pollution which is a great threat to the planet EARTH. Ms. Zohra, from Learning Links foundation spoke on activities of Learning Links foundation and their commitment to plant one million trees. Further, Ms. Latha gave a detailed account of the CSR activities of DELL company and their commitment towards Green India mission. Dr. V. Sudharani, Director of Extension has highlighted the global warming, changing climate and it’s negative effects on Agriculture and allied sectors and need to reverse through climate resilient Agricultural practices. She spoke about social costs and social benefits of environmental conservation. Dr. Seema, Dean of Agriculture and Agril. Engineering opined that there is a dire need to enhance the awareness of all stakeholders on building Greener Tomorrow through green initiatives. She further suggested to involve students for painting on the rocks in ABDP. Dr. M. Venkata Ramana indicated that the earth is warming up due to many anthropogenic activities leading to global climate change and it’s consequences have become a reality today. We are celebrating 50 years of inception of WED (1974) by UNEP. It is not only the responsibility of governments but also citizens, groups are to make efforts to protect and restore the earth. We should learn to live sustainably with minimum damage to ecology, environment, biodiversity, resources around us to establish a sustainable future. He directed all the participants to make changes in daily life style and ‘Use your voice and your choice to drive change’ and promote the concept of 3 ‘R’s concept (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). He further suggested to plant endangered species, natural dye yielding tree species and arboretum with native species of Telangana in ABDP. The meeting was ended with vote of thanks by Dr. T. Chaitanya and followed by ‘National Anthem’.
