Celebration of World Pulses Day at Agricultural College, Warangal on 10-02-2022

1. Celebration of world pulses day at adopted village, Damera
 On the occasion of World Pulses Day (10.02.2022) village adoption committee of Agricultural College, Warangal conducted an awareness programme on "Importance of Pulses cultivation" to the farmers at adopted village, Damera on 10.02.2022.  World Pulses Day is celebrated annually on 10th February every year and the theme for 2022 is “Pulses to empower youth in achieving sustainable agrifood systems”. Dr.G.Swathi, Asst. Prof addressed the gathering and briefed about the importance of pulses in our daily food intake and nutrition provided by them in maintaining our lives healthy. She said that pulses are crucial in terms of food security, nutritional value and environmental benefits. She informed farmers that these crops are also useful in climate change mitigation since they can reduce dependence on artificial fertilizers for inducing nutrients such as nitrogen into the soil. To improve the soil fertility status, farmers can grow pulses as main crop and also as an inter-crop in view of increasing the feasibility of agricultural production system. Dr. Ch. Anusha, Asst. Prof (Entomologist) explained about integrated pest management practices in pulses like installation of pheromone traps for Helicoverpa armigera and installation of yellow sticky traps for white flies and blue sticky traps for thrips and also recommended insecticides for their control. Smt. Ch. Yashaswini, Asst. Prof (Plant pathology) explained about disease symptoms, favorable conditions, integrated disease management with respect to seed treatment with biocontrol agents, resistant cultivars, soil solarization, application of organic amendments, irrigation management and chemical management in different pulse crops. Smt. L. Suhasini, Asst Prof (Horticulture) enlightened farmers about nutritional importance of pulses which contribute as the major source of protein for all the age groups of people enhancing the immunity condition of every individual and can be useful for controlling health issues such as obesity, high blood sugar and cholesterol and the possibility of further processing or value addition can also be considered as an another source of revenue generating employment opportunities in the present situation.  In this programme, village adoption committee members and 30 farmers participated.

2. Essay writing competition to final year students
An essay writing competition was conducted to final year B.Sc(Hons.)Ag. students at seminar hall on 10-02-2022 on the theme "Pulses to empower youth in achieving sustainable agrifood systems" from 12.00 - 1.00 pm. Twenty students have actively participated in the competition and certificates were distributed to the winners of the competition.

3. Invited lecture by Dr. Ch. Bharadwaj, Principal Scientist (chickpea), IARI, New Delhi

Agricultural College, Warangal organized virtual lecture on “Prebreeding and germplasm enhancement in legumes: A forward for pulse sustainability” by Dr. Ch. Bharadwaj, Principal Scientist (chickpea), Division of Genetics, IARI, New Delhi through cisco webex platform from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm. Dr. R. Jagadeeshwar, Director of Research has graced the occasion.          Dr. M. Balram, Associate Dean, Dr.R.Uma Reddy, ADR, RARS, WGL, teaching faculty of Agricultural college, warangal & scientists of RARS, Warangal, ICAR scientists and thirty final year students have participated in the event. The lecture was closed with an interactive question answer forum.
