On the eve of World soil day, a capacity building programme has been conducted on “Importance of soil analysis and integrated use of manures and fertilizers’’ at Gudur - Adopted village of College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, PJTSAU on 04/12/2021 with SBI sponsorship to create an awareness among the farming community. Dr B. Rajeswari, Professor (Pathology) and the Convenor, village adoption committee has inaugurated the programme by giving brief insights about the importance of the programme that the current generation puts more pressure on the soil than ever before. There is a need for fertile soils to produce yields that will feed the world’s ever-growing population. Sri B. Sattaiah, Sarpanch, Guduru (V) has explained the farming community about the need of the training programme. Dr. G. Jayasree, Professor & Head, Department of Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry was the chief guest of the programme; addressed the gathering that in order to achieve sustainability in crop production, soil testing is the first step in soil management, this activity gives farmers valuable information that helps them improve the soil’s health; healthy soils eventually imply healthy crops. Testing soil prior and receiving informed fertiliser recommendation prevents farmers from applying an excessive amount of fertilisers and minimising the related environmental damages. Continuous use of inorganic fertilizer causes soil organic matter degradation and environmental pollution and that there is a need for integrated nutrient management resulting in enhancing the soil fertility and productivity without affecting the environment. Later a small quiz competition has been conducted to the farmers and the best performed farmers have been rewarded with first and second prizes.. Sri V.Padmanabham Pillai, SBI, Hyderabad and Sri Sushmitha, Branch Manager, SBI Kothuru (M) has participated in the programme and explained various schemes of SBI to the benefit of the farming community. Sri Gopal, Mandal Agricultural Officer has addressed the farmers about importance of the soil testing and explained the farmers to opt for soil testing for every five years. The team of village adoption committee and farmers from the adopted village were present during theprogramme The programme was concluded with the formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr B Rajeswari, Convenor, Village adoption Programme.
