Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kampasagar, celebrated World Soil Day-2024 on December, 5th 2024 with enthusiasm to emphasize the importance of healthy soils for sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation. The event focused on raising awareness among farmers about soil health management and its role in boosting agricultural productivity. Dr. S. Srinivasa Rao, Programme Coordinator, highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage,” and discussed the need for regular soil testing to ensure balanced nutrient application. He encouraged farmers to adopt soil-friendly practices, such as crop rotation, green manuring, and the use of organic inputs, to maintain soil fertility. Other scientists, including Dr. K. Chandra Shaker, SMS (Crop Production), provided insights on the benefits of Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), while Smt. A. Ramulamma (SMS, Plant Protection) stressed the importance of minimizing chemical inputs to prevent soil degradation. Smt. T. Himabindu (SMS, Horticulture) emphasized the role of organic matter in improving soil structure and water retention, and Smt. S. Pallavi (SMS, Extension) discussed KVK's initiatives in promoting sustainable soil management practices. Smt. Parvathi Chowhan (MAO) emphasized the benefits of incorporating crop stubbles into the soil instead of burning them, highlighting its role in improving soil organic carbon levels. Mr. Venkatesh, an Agronomist from Coromandel Company, provided insights into their organic products designed to enhance soil health and fertility. Later distributed organic manure and PSB to the farmers. Educated farmers about crop residue management by demonstrating the cotton shredder at Instructional Farm, KVK.
