Community Science is an applied and integrated science which aims at improving the quality of life for the individual, the family and the community. Although national concerns such as poverty, illiteracy, health, population, nutrition, security, infant mortality are covered in Community Science education.
To develop human resource in the field of nutrition and dietetics, food science, interior design & ergonomics, textiles, apparel and fashion design, child development, child and family counseling centers, mass communication and journalism. This education will help in making the students capable of undertaking higher education or gainful employment in public and private sector undertakings. They become capable of bringing about positive socio-economic impact in the community.
Offer courses in nutrition, public health, food science, human development, and family studies, resource management, textiles and apparel designing, extension and communication management education to the students for different job opportunities both in public and private sectors through various endeavors like education, research, extension, production and other role played in service industry by them in development of community in India and abroad.
College of Home Science is established in 1964. During 2016 the name of the college was changed to College of Community Science. The college is located at the heart of the city beside Secretariat, Saifabad, Hyderabad.
The B.Sc. (Hons.) Community Science (earlier B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science) is a four year professional degree course with three years of course work and one year of Student READY Programme. The faculty of Community Science has 5 departments viz; Foods and Nutrition, Human Development and Family Studies, Apparel Design and Textiles, Resource Management and Consumer Sciences, Extension Education and Communication Management. All these 5 departments offer basic courses in the first two years, elective courses offered in the third year and the student READY programme in the final year. The undergraduate degree is given as B.Sc. (Hons.) Community Science. Further the students can pursue PG and Ph.D. degrees with specialization in the above subjects.
Student READY programme in final year includes e-based learning modules, Rural Awareness Work Experience (RAWE) in villages, experiential learning, and internship/in-plant training in reputed institutions were being offered as a unique practical oriented professional course. The Rural Awareness Work Experience (RAWE) helps the students primarily to understand the rural situations, status of homestead / agricultural technologies adopted by rural families, prioritize their problems and to develop skills and attitude of working with farm families for overall development in rural area. The duration of this programme is for 10 weeks.
The motto of the Experiential Learning Programme in agriculture universities is to “Earn while Doing”. This approach emphasizes hands-on, practical experience as a key component of learning, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world agricultural settings. The duration of the AELP programme is 24 weeks. College of Community Science has 4 established AELP units as given below.
The programme provides an opportunity to develop insight into the practical application of academic knowledge, serves as the essential transition between formal education and professional practice. The internship is proposed to assist the students’ in obtaining a broad range of quality professional experience, aids in preparing and developing potentially employable graduates ready to serve the industry. The programme helps the students to develop their personality and capacity to adapt to, and handle, challenging situations in the real business world. Through the internship program, the students should be able to acquire communications skills, interpersonal skills, technical skills, teamwork skills, management skills and problem solving skills. The duration of this programme is for 10 weeks.
The College of Community Science at Saifabad, Hyderabad has fully developed departments with most of the faculty with doctoral degrees (70.37% Permanent and TA’s). Fully furnished Classrooms and modernized laboratories with updated instruments and equipment, computer labs with state of art software to teach ICT, fashion and interior design, sports facility and Campus Radio, library, and many other amenities like Wi Fi offer students to explore their talents towards healthy leadership and proficiency.

Age Criteria :The candidates for admission to these courses shall be required to have completed 17 years of age with an upper age limit of 22 years for all the candidates, 25 years in respect of SC and ST candidates and 27 years for Physically Handicapped candidates as on 31st December of the year of admission.

The department of Apparel & Textiles focuses on providing quality education to the students by preparing the students as professionals in specialized fields of Apparel & Textiles. Besides doing extensive research work in designing both for the normal and the differently abled individuals, the department has worked extensively on other thrust areas such as natural dyes, sports clothing, functional clothing, nano textiles and healthcare textiles. The department has established Natural Dye Processing & Incubation Center and a Textile Testing lab which is ISO certified. The lab offers a wide range of testing services on a payment basis to the industry.
In the year 2016, Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) has sponsored a project on "Bio-degradable eco-paint production for idol painting with Natural dyes on large scale" which is first of its kind in India and a facility was created with a production capacity of 2 tonnes of eco-paint per day. The unit is contributing to Green consumerism and enterprise development
Department of Extension Education and Communication Management (HECM) equips the students with knowledge and analytical thinking on policies, programmes and process for empowerment of rural women, thereby their families; to provide hands-on-training on information collection and processing using various media management techniques; and to develop and appreciation for rural life among students to take up profession for rural development. Campus Radio ‘Jalsa Josh’ is operated and maintained by the students for information dissemination to the whole campus
Vigyana SaadhithaIt is a pioneering department in the Faculty of Home Science with a history of 54yrs of teaching under graduates and 50yrs of teaching post graduates and 40yrs guiding PhD scholars. The saga of the department grew multifaceted by training students for the challenges of a career in the field of Food and Nutrition, with a strong technical foundation in food science, processing and preservation, food safety and quality control, food product development, analysis of food composition, dietetics and with imparting practical skills in assessing nutritional problems and provide dietary treatment and counseling.

The MFPI – Quality Control Laboratory, located in EEI campus of the university since 2007, is a state of art NABL accredited research facility of the University delivering food analytical services. The lab is under accreditation with NABL since 2015 and implements ISO/IEC 17025:2005 Quality Management Systems.
The department facilitates students to learn and gain practical, transferable skills that will prepare them to interact with a wide variety of people throughout their career through a wide range of human services while attaining an understanding of human development across the life span and the influences of the family and the community on development. In addition to this, students in the department also acquire knowledge on advocating for new social policies and programs and also developing new models to prevent and treat social, emotional, and behavioral problems. The department also has facilities like Lab Crèche, Lab Nursery School and Lab Kindergarten Sections. All the course content of HDFS are practical oriented. Through lab schools the students of HDFS learn organization and management of early childhood care centers. They participate in lab school activities and gain hands on experience.
This discipline pertains to scope of management in judicious use of resources to achieve the goals. The students are also trained on techniques related to enhancing efficiency and safety at work by application of ergonomic principles. Planning for functional housing along with aesthetics of interior decoration and consumer education are other fields of study. This department attempts to clarify the scope and meaning of management in the home while helping students to recognize and make the best use of the available resources in and around the home.
College of Home Science library has a robust collection of 16698 books, out of which 1802 are gifted books. It also has a collection of 1165 Indian Journals and 168 International Journals, 917 thesis, 814 back volumes, 183 magazines. It has subscribed to 9 daily newspapers. The library also provides computer facility with internet access to the students.
The beautiful college in the center of the city also provides in-campus hostel facility for the students. The campus is endowed with greenery and well-maintained lawns. The hostel buildings offer a peaceful and a stimulating environment to the students including gym facility which can cater all types of need for their development. The hostel mess is run by the students, which is regularly supervised by the wardens to ensure good and healthy diet.
Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in Home Science (CAFT-H.Sc) is the only centre of its kind in India to disseminate knowledge and technical skill in all areas of Home Science education to the faculty members of SAU’s and ICAR Institutions since 19 years.
